Do NASCAR drivers prefer slots or tables?
By Dominic Aragon
March 12, 2017 LAS VEGAS—NASCAR is in The Sin City for the third race weekend of 2017. We asked various drivers in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and XFINITY Series about their gambling preferences, strategies and if they are staying at a casino resort.
Q. SLOTS OR TABLES?
Justin Allgaier: “Tables, all the way. Blackjack is my game that I enjoy. It probably doesn’t enjoy me like I enjoy it, but I do enjoy coming out to Vegas, more so just sitting down and talking to people.”
William Byron: “I’m not old enough to gamble, so when I’m here, I just hang out and try and sight see and stuff like that. It’s a little bit different but it’s fun.”
Cole Custer: “Slots; I can’t gamble yet though.”
Spencer Gallagher: “Oh, I’m a roulette man.”
Joey Gase: “I’m not a big gambler. I’d say I gamble enough [racing]. But I watch my grandparents play slots.”
Brendan Gaughan: “I’m a table guy.”
Jeff Green: “Room. No slots or tables for me.
“It works out to where the college basketball games are on, so we just eat supper and watch some basketball games, have fun.”
Daniel Hemric: “Tables.”
Kyle Larson: “Tables.”
Joey Logano: “Neither. I like my money, I’m not going to lose it doing that.”
Brad Keselowski: “Blackjack.”
Blake Koch: “Man, I just go to the fitness center and ride that spin bike for a long time, getting ready for my race, so I’m not a big gambler.”
B.J. McLeod: “I do all my gambling at the racetrack.”
Morgan Shepherd: “I don’t gamble. Never have gambled. I can’t stand to lay my money down and not get it back.”
David Starr: “Slots.”
Daniel Suarez: “Tables, I guess. I don’t know, I’m not a big gambler, the only time that I gamble is [in] the racecar.”
Cole Whitt: “I don’t even know. I’m not a good gambler.”
J.J. Yeley: “Neither. I’m not a gambling guy. The whole time that I’ve been here, I’ve went to the dirt races instead of going to the casinos.”
Q. WHAT’S YOUR GAMBLING STRATEGY?
Justin Allgaier: “Win money.”
Alex Bowman: “I’m a tables guy, but I didn’t gamble one bit this trip. Only thing I gambled on was the $65 burger last night at dinner, if it was good or not.
“It wasn’t worth $65, so I lost 65 bucks, but it’s not the end of the world there.”
Cole Custer: “[If I could gamble], I’d probably be pretty cheap, I don’t know.”
Joey Gase: (On his grandparents’ strategy) “Just keep pushing the button, I guess.”
Daniel Hemric: “Roulette’s my game, for one. My strategy is, don’t be scared. You can’t play with scared money, that’s something my father-in-law told me a long time ago.
“...I’m typically [betting] red or black, try to build up a little money, and then I get carried away putting it on all kinds of numbers.”
Spencer Gallagher: (Roulette) “Put $100 on red or black; it hits or it doesn’t. If it hits, I take my $200 and walk away. If it doesn’t the gods didn’t want me to win that night.”
David Starr: “Every year I’ve been coming here, if I need any luck, I need it at the racetrack. So I always wait until after the race.”
Q. WHERE ARE YOU STAYING?
Justin Allgaier: “Mandalay Bay.”
Cole Custer: “Luxor.”
Joey Gase: “We’re staying at South Point this time around.”
Daniel Hemric: “Cosmopolitan.”
Blake Koch: “We’re at the SLS this weekend.”
Joey Logano: “We stay here at the racetrack. It’s funny, most people come out to Vegas and enjoy it but this is a work trip for me, so you’ve got to stay focused and on the race.”
B.J. McLeod: “We’re usually MGM Grand people.”
Morgan Shepherd: “I’m staying at the track.”
David Starr: “I’m staying at the South Point because Brendan Gaughan owns it, and gives us a good deal.”
Cole Whitt: “South Point this time.”
J.J. Yeley: “South Point.”
