AVONDALE, Ariz.—With an 18th place run Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway, Justin Allgaier picked up his best Sprint Cup finish of 2015.

Allgaier, who started 28th, ran as high as ninth place Sunday.

“We felt like our car had great long run speed, we just we’re just a little bit slower on the short runs,” he said to The Racing Experts.

Allgaier’s finish puts him and his team 28th in driver’s points, 31 points out of a Chase spot. Allgaier complimented his crew chief and their strategy on working through the field.

“Throughout the race, Steve Addington made great pit calls,” he said. “We methodically worked our way up to the front. At the end there, probably being a little bit greedy, I saw a hole and tried to go for it and unfortunately, I just got out of the grove and got passed by quite a few guys.

“Not the end result we were looking for, but definitely a solid day for us.”

The team’s result is also Allgaier’s first lead lap finish of 2015, and Allgaier acknowledged the strides made on the racetrack today.

“The old saying is ‘you’ve got to crawl before you walk and walk before you can run,’ and I feel like, throughout the course of the day, we learned some stuff with the car, and that’s only going to help us moving forward.”
