Aric Almirola says he and his Richard Petty Motorsports team need to have more speed in their cars.
“We’re grinding these races out,” Almirola said to The Racing Experts. “We’re showing up to the racetrack with not the speed we need.”
Four races into the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, Almirola sits 17th in driver’s standings, three points behind Jimmie Johnson who holds the final Chase-eligible position.
Almirola began 2017 with a fourth-place finish in the Daytona 500, subsequently finishing 27th at Atlanta, 14th at Las Vegas and 17th at Phoenix.
Almirola said Phoenix was a “solid day” for the No. 43 team, their third lead lap finish of the season.
This season is the first time in RPM’s nine-year existence the team is fielding a single-car operation.
Almirola is averaging a 25th place starting position, the lowest average among drivers inside the top-25 in points.
“We’ve got to show up with more speed in our cars, that’s all,” he said.
Almirola will start the Auto Club 400 31st in row 16, his fourth consecutive start of 28th or lower.
