Angelle Sampey Grabs Top Spot on Friday at Brainerd
BRAINERD, Minn. – Angelle Sampey is having a great weekend in Brainerd so far. She powered her Star Racing/Precision Service Equipment Buell to the No. 1 position after two rounds of qualifying at the 35th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. In one of the most competitive professional classes in the NHRA, Sampey will proceed into Saturday’s qualifying as the one to beat.
In the first qualifying round, Sampey started with a good foundation when she ran a 6.956-second pass at 192.25 mph. With that foundation, the George Bryce-lead team adjusted the tuneup and came back up the lanes to see if their efforts would translate into faster elapsed times.
It was a 6.848, 194.94 that shot Sampey all the way to the No. 1 spot and solidified her as the provisional No. 1 qualifier at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals; she also collected three bonus points for her incredible run.
“I have to give it up to Jim and Annie Whiteley,” Sampey said. “They sponsor my bike with their company Precision Service Equipment and they’ve been helping us get more parts and pieces to go fast. In the middle of the season, they saw the potential of what we could do with the Buells and they really stepped up our program. They helped us get some more research and development and that’s what’s going on. The team is working extra hard on my motorcycle and Cory’s bike as well; he’s really coming along too.”
The two final qualifying runs will be held on Saturday, August 20th at 1:00 and 3:30 p.m. at Brainerd International Raceway.
