DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Former play-by-play announcer, Allen Bestwick, is not a part of the working media this weekend, but he will be in attendance of the 60th running of “The Great American Race.”

Bestwick, who used to call the restrictor plate races “the great equalizer” among teams, says at least half of the cars in the field Sunday have a realistic shot of winning the Daytona 500.

“There are so many variables in it this year,” Bestwick said to The Racing Experts. “Just the pit crew part of it, alone, when it comes right down to that last stop—who gets it right, who gets it wrong, one mistake, when does it happen, who gets caught up, it’s at least half, if not more, and that’s the great part of Daytona.”

Bestwick added, “It doesn’t matter how many years you go back... it’s part of what makes the races, you never know what’s going to happen.”

Bestwick has called prestigious races in motorsport including the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 for NBC and ABC respectively.

Television coverage of the 2018 Daytona 500 is Sunday on FOX.
