Things have changed since the last time Clint Bowyer scored a top-five finish in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

Bowyer was driving for a different team, manufacturer and sponsor. NASCAR’s premiere series had a different entitlement sponsor. Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart were all still racing.

The list goes on.

Bowyer finished third in the Auto Club 400 Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, posting his first top-five since 2015.

Bowyer’s last top-five finish was a fifth-place finish at Bristol in August of 2015, 53 races ago.

“It was a good weekend for us,” Bowyer said. “We never showed the speed in practice, but I wasn’t worried about it because I knew the car was really comfortable on the long run and things like that.

“I was proud of the effort that [crew chief Mike Mike Bugarewicz] and all the guys give me each and every week.”

Bowyer’s third-place run ties his best finish in 61 races. He finished third at Sonoma in 2015.

The third-place finish moved Bowyer to eighth in driver’s standings, 34 points above the Chase cutline.

It’s the highest Bowyer has ranked in points since March of 2015.
