Chase Elliott waves to the crowd during driver introductions at Phoenix International Raceway.
Chase Elliott’s qualifying lap of 19.538 Friday at Martinsville Speedway ensured the 19-year-old a start in Sunday’s STP 500.
Elliott, who ranked 29th after first practice Friday, will start his maiden Cup race from the inside of row 14.
“I don’t how I feel being excited about being 27th, but the same time, really exciting to make it in our first Cup race,” he said.
Martinsville is the first of five scheduled Sprint Cup races in 2015 for the 2014 Xfinity Series champion. Sunday’s race will mark the third start at the speedway in a NASCAR-sanctioned race for Elliott.
Elliott talked Friday about lap times and how close in position the trials are in relative to fellow drivers.

Chase Elliott turns laps at Martinsville Speedway Friday.
“Just crazy how much different of a world this is, on this side of things—being times so close,” he said. “A couple hundredths would have had us in the top-24.”
Elliott talked about how he and his team hope to run competitively during their partial Cup schedule. As for this Sunday, Elliott discussed the goal of finishing on the lead lap.
“I just want to put together 500 solid laps on Sunday and try to run all the laps and hopefully we can have a good day.”
NOTE: Elliott ran in both NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races at Martinsville Speedway in 2013, finishing sixth in the April race and 20th in the October race.
