Drivers to watch for in the Can-Am 500

AVONDALE, Ariz.—The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is headed to the desert in Southwestern Arizona. 40 drivers have entered in the Can-Am 500 at Phoenix Raceway (2:30 p.m. E.T. Sunday, NBC).
DRIVERS TO WATCH
Kevin Harvick leads active drivers with an average finish of 2.8 in the last five points-paying points races at Phoenix.
Harvick has won six of the last ten races at Phoenix and has led 506 laps, but was unable to lead a lap back in the last two races.
The Bakersfield, California-native has momentum on his side after winning last week’s AAA Texas 500. With his victory, Harvick secured a spot in the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Kyle Busch has had an average finish of 3.3 in the last four races (missed Spring 2015 due to injury). Busch has finished inside the top five in each of those four races.
The driver of the No. 18 machine enters the Arizona desert already locked into the Championship round at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Kurt Busch enters Phoenix looking to make a statement after team owners Tony Stewart and Gene Haas allowed Busch’s contract to expire without any renewal notice in September.
The 2004 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Champion has had an average finish of 9.6 and has finished in the top ten in four of the last five races.
Joey Logano, the defending race winner, has had an average finish of 14.24.
He has finished inside the top ten three times in the last five races at Phoenix.
Logano started on the pole and led 82 laps when the series last visited Phoenix.
The Shell Pennzoil driver has one victory to his resume in 2017, but the victory was encumbered by NASCAR after further inspection at the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord, North Carolina.
At time of publication, according to weather.com, the forecast for Avondale, Arizona will be sunny on race day.
The high temperatures on race day will be 85.
There is a 0 percent chance of rain Sunday.
