LAS VEGAS—A promising run in Las Vegas ended with engine troubles for Michael McDowell Sunday.
During Stage 2 of the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, McDowell’s No. 34 Ford lost power. The Front Row Motorsports driver finished the race 37th, last, completing 100 laps.
“We were on the lead lap, running in the top 20 and having a solid day and started to lose some power,” McDowell said to The Racing Experts. “We’re not really sure what happened but we’ll get back to the shop, figure it out.”
During Stage 1, McDowell elected to stay on the racetrack during a cycle of green flag pit stops, eventually taking the lead on lap 39.
McDowell led for a total of 11 laps; his previous high was four laps led in a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race three prior times.
“It’s fun to lead, it’s good TV, good exposure for Love’s Travel Stops, but really, it was just playing out our strategy, and it worked out,” McDowell said.
