Chip Ganassi Racing will not be celebrating a driver’s championship in the XFINITY Series this year with one of his teams, but victories by Kyle Larson earlier this season made the No. 42 eligible for the owner’s championship in the XFINITY Series.
Kyle Larson and Tyler Reddick share the driver’s seat for most of the season, however, Ganassi needed a driver for Charlotte and Phoenix.
Ganassi hired Alex Bowman to drive the No. 42 car for Charlotte and Phoenix.
“Well we had some openings there, we have a good partner in Hendrick and we had a couple open races,” Ganassi said. “We wanna be in it because we are high up in the points with the No. 42 car and owners points.
“We wanted to put a good shoe in there to do that with. So it kinda worked out a win-win for everybody there.”
Bowman last competed in the XFINITY Series in 2016, making nine starts for with JR Motorsports.
Bowman will take over the No. 88 for Hendrick Motorsports in the MENCS in 2018. He hasn’t raced in any of NASCAR’s premier series since Homestead in 2016, when he was filling in for Dale Earnhardt Jr.
