FORT WORTH, Texas—Brendan Gaughan feels confident he will qualify for the inaugural NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase. Gaughan enters Friday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway sixth in driver standings, 46 points above the cutline.
“Well, with the new Chase format, you don’t have to monitor points that closely,” Gaughan said to The Racing Experts Thursday. “That’s what’s great about the Chase format in the Xfinity Series, is that we don’t have to sit there and say, ‘Man, we’re already 34 points out of the lead, that’s seven races, eight races to make up.’

“All we’ve got to do is make sure we maintain that top-twelve position, which I feel pretty confident we can do.”
Gaughan has placed inside the top-ten three times this season with a best finish of seventh at Auto Club Speedway.
The 40-year-old driver says the addition of the Chase format changes the way he and his team prepare for races.
“When I go to Richmond, which is a place I notoriously suck at, I’m going there with a completely different attitude now,” he said. “I don’t have to worry about the points.
“I’m going to go there and basically do the Tom Cruise version instead of the Harry Hyde version. I’m going to give it a shot because I’ve never been able to go there without that pressure. You can definitely race different, and once you get a win, you can really change the whole strategy of the team, so I’m really excited about the Chase format.”
