Geoff’s Journal: Previewing the final elimination race

Four drivers will be eliminated from the playoffs Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, and the final four drivers will be set for the championship battle at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

RACING AT PHOENIX I had the opportunity to race on both the old and newer configuration and personally I liked the old Phoenix track better.

There are many ways you can drive this track, like the back straightaway, you can go down on the flat part, stay off the banking, and make it straight from Turn 2 to Turn 3. It’s exciting, but it doesn’t seem right to me.

A race in the Arizona sun, it’s a physically demanding race.

PLAYOFFS We know that three drivers; Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. will be battling for the title, but five drivers will battle for one spot.

No driver is in a mathematical must-win situation, but stage points could play a role in making the next round for a driver like Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin or Ryan Blaney.

This could be the first season without a Team Chevrolet driver having a chance to compete for the series title since 2003. That would be incredible, and disastrous for Chevrolet.

Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson sit 49 and 51 points respectively behind Brad Keselowski, the fourth-place driver in the Playoff standings. They are the highest ranking Chevrolet drivers.

It’s hard to get to the top. Jimmie Johnson has climbed there and stayed for a while, but it’s harder to stay there. Maybe that time is up.

Even though they aren’t in the playoffs, I would to see Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Joey Logano run well.

The next two races are going to be exciting to watch.
