Geoff’s Journal: Previewing the first elimination race

By Geoff Bodine

The cream of the crop made the playoffs this season, and this weekend, we will unfortunately scrape a little off the top of that cream with four drivers being eliminated.

Dover is known for crashes, especially off of the narrow, banked Turn 2. If someone gets in trouble at that point of the track, it could mean a huge pileup.

NO. 5 KASEY KAHNE

It would be a shame if Kahne fails to advance to the second round.

I have a special place in my heart for the No. 5 in the Cup Series, being the original driver for Hendrick with that number.

21 points back, Kahne will likely need to win to make the next round.

NO. 41 KURT BUSCH

Everyone in the playoffs wants to have a great run. He’s had some tough luck this season.

Without a little bit of that tough luck, he’d be in a better place in points.

He needs a good run and misfortune of others to likely advanced to the next round.

RICHARD CHILDRESS RACING (NO. 3 AUSTIN DILLON AND NO. 31 RYAN NEWMAN)

Both RCR drivers in the playoffs, who won their races this season on gambles, are on the outside looking in.

Richard has a great team and great support, but he’s missing something. I’m not sure what it is, but I hope he finds it for next year.

It’s hard to get to the top and harder to stay there. His team has been there, and his cars may be proof of that.

WHAT TO WATCH
It’s very easy to get into a crash at Dover.

It’s a tough track and a tough race. Things happen quick.

A fast car get knocked out in just a little skirmish. There’s just absolutely no way to predict who is going to win with certainty.

However, if you go by the trends of this season, Martin Truex Jr. sure looks good.

Jimmie Johnson has won at that track 11 times, and anyone in the playoffs has a great chance to run well Sunday.
