FONTANA, Calif.— Kevin Harvick turned the fastest lap in Friday’s lone practice session for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) at Auto Club Speedway.
Harvick, who has won the last three MENCS races, turned a lap in 38.082 seconds (189.066 mph) around the 2-mile Southern California track.
Clint Bowyer, was second on the speed charts, followed by Aric Almirola and Ryan Newman. Kyle Larson, the defending race winner, was fifth fastest.
Three of the four Stewart-Haas Racing teammates ran inside the top three.
David Ragan turned 17 laps in opening practice, the most of all drivers.
With 32 minutes remaining in the session, Suarez got loose in Turn 2 and made contact with the outside wall. Damage was too extensive to the primary car to continue, and the team rolled the backup car out of the transporter.
36 of 37 drivers who entered in Sunday’s Auto Club 400 turned a lap in the opening practice session. Gray Gaulding did not attempt a lap in practice.
According to a tweet from the team, the car popped out of gear on the backstretch and the team prepared to change a transmission and engine.
The Auto Club 400 will run Sunday on FOX at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
