MARTINSVILLE, Va.—Jimmie Johnson will have to start Sunday’s First Data 500 from the rear of the field because the team changed tires after qualifying 24th Sunday.
While entering the third turn, the seven-time champion wheel-hopped and spun up the track, avoiding contact with the outside wall.
The team received the penalty because changing tires is considered a “performance enhancer.”
