Time is running out for Erik Jones to make the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.
The 21-year old has had a 2017 season sprinkled with solid runs, along with inconsistency on pit road and about as many DNFs as top-10 finishes.
Without a victory in his rookie campaign, Jones enters this weekend’s race at Michigan International Speedway with a 160 point deficit to the playoff cutline.
A win would negate that. And Jones knows what it’s going to take to qualify for the post-season behind-the-wheel of the No. 77 Furniture Row Racing Toyota.
“It’s going to take a solid day,” he said to The Racing Experts. “We’re going to have to qualify really well and not have any mistakes all day long.
“We’ve had cars that I think have been fast enough to win, we just haven’t had the execution to go with it.”
Through 22 races, Jones’ season has included seven top-10 finishes with a best finish of third at the Pocono June race and six DNF’s, including two last-place finishes.
