AVONDALE, Ariz.—Erik Jones is optimistic he can help his team and teammate be better prepared for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series March race weekend at Phoenix International Raceway with his opportunity to participate in the Goodyear tire test at the raceway this week.

Jones is one of 13 scheduled drivers to test during the two-day session at PIR Tuesday and Wednesday. He is also one of four rookie drivers this season.

With NASCAR restricting the test to one driver per race team, Jones is hoping to talk and share information with teammate Martin Truex Jr.

“I didn’t really talk to Martin too much before this test here today,” Jones said to The Racing Experts in a press conference at the track.

“I hope I can talk to him after and debrief with him and go through some of the things I felt and see if he had similar thoughts, and hopefully, have something to help them out when we do come back here in a few weeks.”

The series will return to the track for the fourth stop of the 2017 schedule March 17-19.

Tuesday was the first time Jones officially turned laps behind the No. 77 Toyota. The driver said he turned about “30 or 40 laps” during the first part of Tuesday’s session.

Jones will be competing in his first full season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

Jones has made three starts in NASCAR’s top series, with his most recent start coming at Phoenix International Raceway in November of 2015.
