Logano in must-win position to make playoffs

Joey Logano must win at Richmond Raceway next Saturday night in order to qualify for the 2017 Cup Series’ postseason.

“It’s pretty simple,” Logano said. “You could almost write an article without talking to me.”

Logano, who unofficially sits 15th in driver’s standings, finished 18th at Darlington, his fifth consecutive finish outside the top-10.

Logano has qualified for the playoffs the last four seasons.


Joey Logano qualified eighth for the Southern 500. After the first caution, Logano came off pit road in fifth.

At the conclusion of stage one, Logano finished ninth.

Under caution on pit road, Logano’s engine shut off and it cost Joey a handful of positions. Logano restarted started stage two in 15th position. After a caution and the restart, Logano ended up back in 15th.

It was reported that under the caution once again, Logano’s engine shut off and wouldn’t refire causing him to lose a several positions once again. Logano made up some ground and finished the stage under caution in seventh.

Logano restarted stage three in 8th until a caution came out early in the stage. Logano restarted in eighth and managed to maintain that position.

After a caution came out, Logano restarted in sixth and started putting pressure on Kyle Busch for the fifth position.

After green flag pit stops cycled through, Logano ended up in the 12th position. At the end of the Southern 500, Joey Logano finished 18th.

“We were good in the day, but when we got to night time all hell broke loose for us,” Logano said. “We’re on to the next one.”
