Defending Sonoma Winner Chris McGaha Returns to Race of First Pro Stock Win
ODESSA, Tex. – Harlow Sammons Pro Stock driver Chris McGaha took home his first Wally in his Pro Stock career just one year ago at the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals. Returning to Sonoma Raceway this weekend in the second of three races in the Western Swing, McGaha has turned a corner with his fuel injection tune-up just in time to defend his title.
Since his Pro Stock debut at Indy in 2011, McGaha and the Harlow Sammons team has been gunning for their first win. After years of trial and error, McGaha finally put himself in a competitive position when he qualified for the Countdown to the Championship for the first time in 2014. Just one year later, McGaha found himself in the winner circle after defeating V. Gaines, Erica Enders, Jeg Coughlin and Jonathan Gray on his way to his first victory. McGaha qualified No. 1 at the event to secure a wire-to-wire win.
“I have better expectations than I have had recently now that we are going into Sonoma,” McGaha said. “A lot of people slowed up on raceday in Denver last weekend and we actually picked up. We’re getting more runs on the things we’ve had issues with and we’re finally getting our tune-up better. I’m going into Sonoma with a lot more confidence than I’ve had lately.”
Qualifying at the 29th annual Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals begins on Friday, July 29th, with two qualifying sessions at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m. Two more qualifying runs will be on Saturday, July 30th, at 1:10 and 4:15 p.m. Eliminations begin on 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 31st.
