DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—As the sun set over the central Florida speedway, it also set on Danica Patrick’s NASCAR driving career.
Patrick’s career abruptly ended in Sunday’s Daytona 500 after being involved in a multi-car accident.
While entering the third turn on lap 101, Chase Elliott got a shove from the No. 2 of Brad Keselowski. Keselowski had a strong run down the backstretch and turned Elliott into the wall.
Patrick had nowhere to go and got into the wall while trying to avoid the accident.
“I know we pulled this together not that long ago, a month ago,” Patrick said after being released from the track’s infield care center. “That is a tall order to get a car ready for a superspeedway that is competitive.
“But, it was. I said earlier today that I feel like the whole thing was picture perfect with GoDaddy on the car, and it being that green again. It just wasn’t meant to be today.”
Kevin Harvick, Michael McDowell, Kasey Kahne, and Martin Truex Jr. were also involved in the mayhem.
Patrick’s final career start in professional motorsports will occur at the Indianapolis 500 on May 27, 2018.
