Denny Hamlin will be aiming for his first Cup Series championship this year.
Hamlin will start the playoffs seeded seventh with 2,013 total points.
Hamlin is making his 11th career playoff appearance and fourth consecutive. Victories at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway propelled the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to the postseason.
“So I like with this format what we’ve done during the regular season has been rewarded,” Hamlin said. “Even though we're not as high up in the points as what we would like to be, we at least have some bonus points to lean back on in case we have kind of a hiccup in the road.
“I think this format is made for a veteran to go out there and win.”
Hamlin has won at eight of the tracks in the playoffs. He has never won at Dover International Speedway or Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Cup Series. Hamlin’s highest finish in the playoffs was second-place in 2010.
