Matt Kenseth will have a shot at a second Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series title in his final year at Joe Gibbs Racing.

2017 marks the 13th time Kenseth has qualified for the playoffs and eighth consecutive season. He has made the second most playoff appearances, only to Jimmie Johnson’s 14 appearance.

Kenseth was one of three drivers to qualify for the playoffs on points alone. He is seeded 15th with 2,005 total points.

“You take it one race at a time, one round at a time,” Kenseth said about approaching the playoffs. “The first round I feel like we go to some good tracks for us. Should perform well there hopefully. Hopefully we won’t have any trouble and we can get some finishes and hopefully move on to the second round.

“I think it’s always a little bit of a moving target. I think that first one, to get three solid runs, typically you’re okay.

“Then after that, the way the points work, you carry them over and everything, certainly you’re probably going to need wins to get to Homestead.”

Kenseth has won at nine of the ten tracks in the playoffs. The lone track he has yet to claim victory at in the Cup Series is Martinsville Speedway.

Kenseth has never won a title under the playoffs format. His highest finish in driver’s standings under the playoffs format was second-place in 2006 and 2013.
