Ryan Newman is back in the playoffs in search of his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship.
2017 marks Newman’s eighth playoff appearance and first since 2015.
Newman will begin the playoffs seeded 11th with 2,005 totals points.
“Well, we are not where we need to be, but we are in a spot where we’ve got a chance,” Newman said. “We continue to work on it and make the cars better, get out pit stops better.
“I’ve got to improve, qualify better and everything else. So, it takes everything, but I mean obviously finishing third and having four top 10’s in the last five races has been a good streak for us. But you’ve got to win.
“We’ve got to put ourselves in a position to win to get that guarantee buy to the next round.”
The 2014 runner-up has won at seven of the ten tracks in the playoffs.
Newman has not won at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway in NASCAR’s premier series.
Newman’s highest finish in points in the playoffs was a second-place finish in driver’s standings in 2014.
