Rookie Report: Toyota/Save Mart 350

Three of the five Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Rookie-of-the-Year candidates were among the 38 starters in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway Sunday.

The race was the 16th race of  36 for NASCAR’s premiere series in 2017.

Below is a breakdown of how each fared.

NO. 13 TY DILLON
Dillon started 35th and finished 28th, one lap down, in his first Cup Series race at Sonoma.

The Germain Racing driver finished the first stage in 16th (lap 25) and the second stage in 15th (lap 50).

Dillon ran as high as 14th, but finished the race 28th, one lap down. The result was his first finish off of the lead lap in four races.

Unofficially, Dillon leaves Sonoma 23rd in driver’s standings, 154 points behind a playoff-eligible position. Clint Bowyer, 11th in driver’s standings, holds the final playoff position with 427 total points.

NO. 19 DANIEL SUAREZ
Suarez, the highest qualifying and finishing rookie, started 11th and finished 16th in his first Cup Series start at Sonoma.

Suarez finished the first stage in 32nd and the second stage in 29th.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver ran as high as ninth place, eventually finishing as the highest rookie for the sixth time in 2017.

Suarez will enter next weekend’s race at Daytona International Speedway 19th in driver’s standings, 93 points behind the playoff cutline.

NO. 77 ERIK JONES
Jones finished 25th, one lap down, in his first Cup Series road course race.

The Furniture Row Racing driver, who started 30th, finished the first stage 33rd and the second stage 30th.

Jones ran as high as 11th, eventually finishing off the lead lap.

Jones remains as the highest rookie in driver’s standings in 16th, 69 points behind a playoff-eligible position.
