Record-breaking run continues as NAPA band plays on;
Langdon with Okuhara, Shuler to lead DSR dragster quartet

JOLIET, Ill. (July 8, 2016) - Breaking records is becoming a broken record for Ron Capps, crew chief Rahn Tobler and the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car team.
For those who believe CDs are antiques, especially millennials, once upon a time music was imprinted on plastic discs and when overplayed would occasionally skip and repeat refrains: a repetitious act was like a "broken record."
The stellar and consistent performance by the NAPA AUTO PARTS team continued Friday on opening day of the NHRA Route 66 Nationals near Chicago when Capps guided his Dodge to the provisional pole by being the quickest in each of the day's two qualifying sessions.
The NAPA Know How team put the perfect blend of Pennzoil into its 10,000-horsepower Hemi engine that enabled Capps to set a track record with an elapsed time of 3.888 seconds 328.78 mph heading into Saturday final two sessions before championship eliminations at 11 a.m. (CT) Sunday.
It is the fourth time in the past five NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events the NAPA AUTO PARTS team set a track time record and earned the pole for eliminations.
The team also has won three of the last four titles in addition to the season-opener and has built its points lead to 136.
"It's just been so much fun to drive this NAPA Dodge," said Capps, who will try to hold on to earn the team its fifth No. 1 qualifying position of the season through 13 of 24 Mello Yello races.
"It's like I've said after every race we've done this you hope it carries over to the next one. To do what we've done lately with No. 1 qualifiers and winning three of the last four is so above and beyond."
In Top Fuel, Shawn Langdon and the Sandvik Coromant/Red Fuel Powered by Schumacher team continues to lead DSR's four dragsters are put them in the No. 3 spot after a run of 3.739 (327.19). Langdon and the team led by crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler have won the past two Mello Yello Top Fuel titles.
"We're just in a good place right now with this Sandvik Coromant/Red Fuel team," Langdon said. "We didn't run as well as we wanted to in the opening session today and we knew that we would really have to step it up tonight. Todd, Phil, everyone just did a great job and we were pretty pleased with that run."
The most dramatic run of the day for DSR was in Funny Car when Tommy Johnson Jr.'s parachute failed to deploy on a solid 3.921-second run at 325.45 but his Make-A-Wish Dodge Funny Car funded by Terry Chandler went beyond the pavement and was slowed by pea-gravel runoff area.
"I threw the chutes and went to the brakes and didn't feel them," Johnson said. "I hit the (brake) lever again and went back to the brakes and it just was covering a lot of ground down there. It got to bouncing real bad and they don't stop very good when they're in the air.
"I thought it was going to make it there for a little while but it just covered so much ground down there.
"We'll get it fixed for tomorrow. It's just frustrating. We made a nice run but you still have to get it stopped."
The Make-A-Wish team will switch to a secondary body but more importantly, the chassis was not damaged.
