PHOENIX—Daniel Suarez and Joey Logano are among the drivers participating in the two-day tire test at Phoenix International Raceway this week and see it as an opportunity to help their teams.
Suarez, who will be competing for Rookie of the Year honors this season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, says there’s been work behind-the-scenes at Joe Gibbs Racing’s headquarters to get ready for this week’s test.
“There's been a lot going on before this test; preparation in the shop, engineers, crew chief,” Suarez said. “Everything is new but my spotter.”
Wednesday will mark Suarez’s first official laps behind the wheel of a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series racecar.
Suarez says a successful test session would trying to adapt to the racecar "as fast as possible."
"Learn about the car, learn about my team; I feel like if we can adapt all the little details, to get used to everything, myself, to the team, I think that we will be successful,” he said. “I feel like if we can get this done, the speed is going to be there, automatic.” For Logano, the most recent winner at the track in NASCAR’s top-tier series, says a successful test is about learning.
“A lot of times, you don't really chase speed,” he said. “You want to be fast at a track, but you don't really think about that a whole bunch while you're there. You think about just getting through your test items.
“We have a plan, getting through the list, and getting good, clean answers of what's better and what's worse.
“We don't have that time when we get back to a racetrack on a race weekend.”
According to NASCAR.com, Suarez and Logano will be two of 13 drivers at the test session at PIR Tuesday and Wednesday.
