Max Verstappen led the first 15 laps after starting second before issues put him back in the pack. Over the next 21 laps, Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez traded the lead four times, leading 13 laps and eight laps respectively, before Verstappen found his way back to the front and cruised to a 2.07-second win.

It was the 18th of 19 wins for Verstappen in a decimating 2023 championship season. He won the 2023 World Championship, beating teammate Sergio Perez by a whopping 270-point margin.

The championship is much closer. Perez is just under 270 points behind again, at -242 points, but is in eighth in the drivers’ standings. However, there are just two drivers left in contention for the championship:

  1. Max Verstappen: 393 points
  2. Lando Norris: -62 points
  3. Charles Leclerc: -86
  4. Oscar Piastri: -131
  5. Carlos Sainz Jr.: -149
  6. George Russell: -201
  7. Lewis Hamilton: -203
  8. Sergio Perez: -242
  9. Fernando Alonso: -331
  10. Nico Hulkenberg: -362

Verstappen could clinch the 2024 World Championship if he is able to maintain at least a 60-point lead after Las Vegas.

The maximum points a driver can earn in a single non-Sprint F1 weekend is 26 points (25 to win, 1 – Fastest lap of the race). On a Sprint weekend, a driver can earn up to an additional eight points (8 points for winning the Sprint race, 7 for second… 1 point for eighth).

The Nov. 29-Dec. 1 Qatar Grand Prix is the only Sprint weekend left this season. The grands prix in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi are non-Sprint weekends.
