Jimmie Johnson has struggled at times during his maiden NTT INDYCAR Series season but on Sunday he earned his best career NTT INDYCAR Series finish during the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Johnson finished 17th, one lap down, his best finish to date. Johnson was lapped late by Colton Herta who he ran comparable lap times to after being lapped.

Late in the race, Johnson made contact with Romain Grosjean who made a diving move into the corkscrew. Both drivers were able to continue racing after making contact with each other.

Johnson’s previous best finish was 19th, at Barber Motorsports Park in April and the Indianapolis Road Course in August. The 17th-place finish improved Johnson’s average finish from 21.9 to 21.4.

The final race of the 2021 NTT INDYCAR Series season is the Sept. 26 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach (3 p.m. ET; TV: NBCSN).
