FONTANA, Calif. — NASCAR will be reassessing its qualifying format prior to the Texas Motor Speedway race weekend later this month after the Cup Series saw all 12 drivers fail to post a time in the final round of qualifying Friday at Auto Club Speedway, a NASCAR official confirmed.

A NASCAR official called the strategy made a “mockery out of the qualifying.”

“I think we will definitely make some tweaks,” Scott Miller, Senior Vice President of Competition and Competition Administration for NASCAR said to The Racing Experts.

“…We won’t see this sort of situation out at Martinsville, so I would say that by Texas, we’re going to have to because it’ll be a little bit the same scenario with wanting to go out there together and draft, so, I would say that by Texas, we will have something different in the queue.”

There is no word if changes would come to all three national touring series. NASCAR’s national series have been utilizing group qualifying at a majority of races since its introduction in 2014.

Austin Dillon captured the pole for Sunday’s Auto Club 400 via defaulting to his second-round speed after all drivers failed to post a time in round three.

  1. Everybody gets so upset, I think it’s funny. NASCAR makes the rules. Drivers and crew chiefs follow the rules. Then when this happens, everybody starts whining.

The real issue was NASCAR not following through on pit road rules. Cars must be to the right or left and leave a lane open in the middle.

It would be nice if NASCAR didn’t arbitrarily enforce only the rules they chose to. They wonder why fans are confused!
