Ryan Blaney Wins, Ty Gibbs Rises, Cleetus McFalrand’s Next Step & Alex Bowman Sidelined

Ryan Blaney dominates Phoenix, Ty Gibbs builds steam, Cleetus McFarland gets the call, Alex Bowman fights vertigo—expert analysis on this week’s biggest stories

This week on The Racing Roundtable, NASCAR Roundtable publisher Tyler Jones, The Racing Experts founder Dominic Aragon, and ARCA Menards Series driver Matt Kemp welcomed special guest FanBuzz NASCAR writer John Newby for an in-depth discussion.

The panel dove into the thrilling aftermath of Ryan Blaney’s dominant victory at Phoenix Raceway and built excitement for the upcoming Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Tyler Jones, fresh from being on-site at Phoenix, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for the brand-new 750-horsepower package that debuted in the regular season. The increased power delivered exactly what fans and insiders had hoped for: aggressive, high-action racing that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.

Jones highlighted how Phoenix, often criticized for lackluster short-track events in the past, produced one of the most memorable races in recent memory at the track. The Next Gen car’s ongoing refinements appear to have finally addressed those persistent short-track issues, allowing drivers to showcase skill, strategy, and raw speed without the cars becoming too aero-dependent or single-file.

The result was side-by-side battles, multiple lead changes, and a finish that had the crowd roaring—proof that NASCAR’s engineering tweaks are paying dividends and elevating the on-track product.

Dominic Aragon shifted focus to rising star Ty Gibbs, who continues to impress early in the 2026 season. Gibbs led on the final restart at Phoenix and was in prime position for his breakthrough Cup Series win, only to be overtaken by Blaney in the closing laps.

Despite finishing fourth—his second straight top-five result—Gibbs climbed into the playoff hunt, sitting 15th in the standings with momentum building. Aragon praised Gibbs’ composure under pressure, his improving consistency with Joe Gibbs Racing, and the clear signs of confidence returning to the No. 54 team.

He boldly predicted not just one, but multiple victories for the young driver this year, arguing that Gibbs has the talent, equipment, and growing experience to become a consistent threat in the Cup Series. With strong runs already at tracks like Circuit of The Americas and Phoenix, Gibbs seems poised for a breakout campaign that could see him contending for wins on a regular basis.

The conversation turned to one of the biggest off-track stories buzzing in the NASCAR world: YouTube sensation Cleetus McFarland (Garrett Mitchell) securing a spot to make his NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series debut with Richard Childress Racing. Despite his limited professional racing experience, McFarland’s massive online following and passion for motorsports earned him this opportunity, backed by sponsors like Tommy’s Express.

Matt Kemp defended the move emphatically, stressing that McFarland isn’t at fault for seizing a dream chance when it’s offered. He argued that the current approval and vetting processes for such crossovers are outdated and ineffective, often stifling innovation and fresh talent from entering the sport.

In an era where NASCAR seeks to expand its audience, bringing in popular influencers like McFarland could inject new energy, draw younger viewers, and bridge the gap between grassroots enthusiasts and professional racing.

John Newby offered his take on Blaney’s Phoenix triumph, marking his 18th career Cup Series win and first of 2026. Blaney overcame adversity—including loose wheels and penalties—to charge through the field twice and hold off challengers like Christopher Bell in the final stages.

Newby sees this as the start of a potential new dominant phase for the Team Penske driver. With his experience, championship pedigree, and the strong performance of the No. 12 Ford, Blaney could rack up more frequent trips to victory lane, solidifying his status as one of the series’ elite competitors.

The group also addressed the concerning health situation with Alex Bowman, who continues to battle vertigo after symptoms forced him out mid-race at Circuit of The Americas. Bowman has now missed multiple events, including Phoenix (where Anthony Alfredo subbed) and is set to sit out Las Vegas, with Justin Allgaier filling in.

As a contract year looms for the Hendrick Motorsports driver—whose last win came at the 2024 Chicago Street Course—the lack of seat time raises questions about rhythm, performance, and long-term fit with the organization. The panel expressed hope for a swift recovery, noting Hendrick’s support in giving Bowman all the time needed, while acknowledging the competitive pressures in a top-tier team.
