Indy 500 starting grid with odds, TV schedule and more info

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Thirty-three drivers will stare down racing immortality and hope not to blink first on any of the 200 heart-racing laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the 109th running of the Indy 500.

Josef Newgarden comes into Sunday as the two-time and defending champion of the 500. However, a qualifying scandal has left Newgarden without Tim Cindric, his usual team strategist who helped guide him to be the sixth back-to-back winner of the race when they won last year.

Teammate Will Power, the 2018 champion, is also without his usual strategist due to the same scandal impacting Newgarden.

Newgarden is one of three multi-time champions of the 500 who is racing Sunday.

Helio Castroneves won in 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2021 and is seeking a record fifth crown in the 500. Takuma Sato is also a two-time champion — winning in 2017 and 2020 — and is seeking to be the 11th driver to win the 500 three or more times.

The other past champions in the field are Scott Dixon (2008), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2014), Alexander Rossi (2016) and Marcus Ericsson (2022).

Kyle Larson, a past champion of an entirely different racing discipline, is looking to do The Double after inclement weather failed him last year. Larson crashed twice in the process of practicing and eventually qualifying for the 500.

Larson certainly isn’t the only driver who crashed in practice. Colton Herta also crashed, as did Scott McLaughlin, the latter of whom is the teammate to Newgarden and and Power.

All of them will line up behind Robert Shwartzman, the rookie upset pole winner for this year’s Indy 500 with the Prema team that looked to eek into the race — let alone have a chance at possibly winning it.
