Appeals panel upholds bumper throw fine for Joey Gase

The National Motorsports Appeals Panel upheld a $5,000 fine NASCAR handed to Joey Gase for throwing his bumper cover at another car.

Panelists Hunter Nickell, Shawna Robinson and Kevin Whitaker ruled Gase violated rulebook section 8.8.8.K. The section specifies when a driver puts themselves in a dangerous position on the racetrack. They agreed Gase put himself in a dangerous position and that “NASCAR was correct” to fine him.

During a NASCAR Xfinity Series race last month at Richmond Raceway, Dawson Cram bumped Gase going into turn one, sending him into the outside wall. Gase exited his car and yanked off his bumper cover. He then walked down the track and threw the cover at Cram’s car as he drove by.

While Gase had to hand over $5,000 for the incident, he did pick up a sponsor. Gase landed Bumpers That Deliver as a primary sponsor for the August 17 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

Cram landed Xpress Auto Glass. He promoted the sponsorship deal with the tagline, “Sometimes You’re the Bumper. Sometimes You’re the Windshield.”

Cram will race at Dover Motor Speedway while Gase will have JJ Yeley in his car.
