ARCA: Big Willie on pole, SVG in after withdrawal

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A wild qualifying session in the ARCA Menards Series ended with Willie Mullins on the pole and Shane van Gisbergen out of the race – briefly.

Mullins picked up the first pole of his career, running a lap of 48.982 seconds averaging 183.741 MPH around Daytona International Speedway.

Tim Richmond will start on the front row with Mullins after running a lap of 49.003, averaging 183.662 MPH.

Mullins and Richmond beat two Venturini Motorsports entries. Jake Finch and Toni Breidinger qualified third and fourth in the Nos. 20 and 25 VMS entries.

Ryan Huff, Justin Bonsignore, Gil Linster, Bryan Dauzat, Issac Johnson and Jason Kitzmiller round out the top 10 starters.

On the other end, Shane van Gisbergen was one of 10 drivers who failed to qualify for the race.

Then, Eric Caudell and his No. 7 CCM Racing team withdrew after qualifying 17th fastest. That put van Gisbergen in the race.

Van Gisbergen will start his No. 28 Pinnacle Motorsports Chevrolet near the rear of the field. Even if he missed the race, a NASCAR representative confirmed the DNQ wouldn’t affect his clearance for the NASCAR Xfinity Series race Saturday.

Van Gisbergen will race full-time in the Xfinity Series for Kaulig Racing in 2024.

Takuma Koga, Mitch Gibson, Becca Monopoli, Hunter Deshautelle, Cody Dennison, Charles Buchanan, AJ Moyer, Brayton Laster and Dale Shearer failed to qualify for the Daytona ARCA 200.
