Austin Cindric: NASCAR Cup Chase 2026 Preview

Austin Cindric will join his fellow Team Penske teammates in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series chase after his solid late season performance locked in the 15th seed.

This will be his fourth Cup Series postseason appearance and his third consecutive birth as well.

Cindric placed himself inside the final top 16 without the means of a win for the first time in his career.

But his championship aspirations have been stifled before he even took to Darlington this weekend. Team Penske announced the switch of his top ten ranked pit crew for the 30th ranked Ryan Blaney pit crew for the final ten races of the season.

Cindric will have to dig deep in order to even find his way into the top ten for his best career result before the season is over.

Increased Consistency with an Incident Free Ending

Austin Cindric started the 2026 Cup Series season on the wrong foot by placing no better than 26th in the first four race.

They found themselves in an immediate hole. After the first five races with an average finish of 32.4 the No. 2 team was deep in the standings.

Thankfully, their miserable start to the season would only get better. For the rest of the regular season, the team never returned that form.

From there, Cindric found his first top five of the season at Darlington and backed it up with another top ten at Martinsville.

They recovered from the depths of the standings in 30th-place to inside the Chase cutline in 15th by the all-star break.

His final dip in performance came during the Coca-Cola 600 and Nashville races. Cindric was wrapped up in what would become his final DNF of his regular season at Charlotte and a poor result of 28th a week later.

Afterwards. the upwards consistency continued from the summer onwards.

Outside of two races, Naval Base Coronado in San Diego and Iowa, Cindric finished every event inside the top 15 since June.

He entered the regular season finale at Daytona not fully locked into the Chase and had to fight all night to keep his car clean to the finish around the likes of stage one winner Shane van Gisbergen and race winner Ryan Preece.

Cindric was able to accomplish his goal heading into the night race and finished sixth to clinch his Chase birth.

But what can he do from all the way down in 15th place heading into the Chase?

2026 Chase Outlook

For starters, it seems as though Team Penske has already bailed on his quest for a championship.

As it was previously mentioned, Team Penske swapped his ninth overall pit crew with Ryan Blaney’s 30th ranked pit crew starting at the Southern 500.

While the move can be considered rude to Austin, it was the sensible decision to make for not only their organization but Ford as a whole.

So what can he do now? The 15th-seeded Cindric can still fight for his first top ten finish in the standings. His previous best result was 11th in 2024 and any position inside the top ten in ten races can achieve that goal.

Cindric and his No. 2 team will have two tracks on their radar specifically. Gateway and Talladega are both featured in the Chase and the North Carolina native will look to repeat his prior victories at them.

He also boasts a great opportunity at the short flat ovals such as Phoenix and Martinsville, where one of his two top-five results this season came from.

But the competition is stiff, and other drivers around him in the standings have nearly the same postseason experience which matches up well with him.

If Cindric wants to have his most complete season since 2022, he will have to capitalize on mistakes from others and run well at tracks the team has performed great at in recent history.
