Carson Hocevar penalized for spinning Harrison Burton under caution

LEBANON, Tenn. — NASCAR penalized Carson Hocevar for spinning Harrison Burton under caution in Sunday’s Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway.

Hocevar will lose 25 points and have to shell out $50,000. The points penalty will drop him from 22nd in points with 343 points to 24th with 318 points.

After Brad Keselowski crashed in turn two and drew a caution on lap 244, Harrison Burton accelerated to catch up to Carson Hocevar on the backstretch. Burton moved in front of Hocevar to show his displeasure with him. Then, Hocevar bumped into Burton’s right-rear quarter panel, sending him spinning.

Hocevar was audibly upset on the radio and argued Burton blocked. Hocevar’s team quickly told him to stay off the radio (NASCAR officials often monitor radio communication and use it as evidence for any possible intent in a wreck).

Meanwhile, Burton wasn’t having any of Hocevar’s claims.

“If he thinks I blocked, he can kiss my a-s!” Burton exclaimed over the radio.

Hocevar finished 16th, earning 21 points, while Burton finished 28th, earning nine points.

That difference is moot following the penalties issued Tuesday. Hocevar will get credited with -4 points earned Sunday.

The 25-point penalty is consistent with how NASCAR penalized Austin Hill for a similar incident with Cole Custer in the Xfinity Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Hill lost 25 points and $25,000 (a smaller fine is typical in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the Craftsman Truck Series as winnings are smaller).
