NASCAR issues major penalty to Chase Briscoe and his team
CONCORD, N.C. — NASCAR handed down major penalties to Chase Briscoe and his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing team after officials found an infraction with a part of their Daytona 500 car.
Briscoe and his team will lose 100 championship point and 10 playoff points. Crew chief James Small will also sit out the next four NASCAR Cup Series races. The team has also been fined $100,000.
Joe Gibbs Racing will appeal the penalty. In a statement, they explained what they believed the issue was:
“The issue in question was caused in the assembly process when bolts used to attach the spoiler base to the deck lid caused the pre-drilled holes to wear due to supplied part interferences.”
The spoiler base is a single source part. NASCAR has penalized teams before for modifying single source parts, including Briscoe’s team in 2023 when he was still with Stewart-Haas Racing.

With JGR, Briscoe won the pole for this year’s Daytona 500 with a commanding lap time. He was in contention to win the race before a wreck took him out entering turn three.
Briscoe’s car was one of four taken back to the NASCAR R&D Center after the Daytona 500. The cars Austin Cindric, Chase Elliott and Daniel Suarez drove were also taken back. Officials found no issues.
NASCAR also docked 10 driver and owner points from Todd Gilliland and Cody Ware and their respective teams for an infraction involving ballasts in the car.
