Denny Hamlin ties Herb Thomas on wins list

Denny Hamlin’s victory in the Coca-Cola 600 Sunday tied the Joe Gibbs Racing driver with 2013 NASCAR Hall-of-Famer Herb Thomas on the NASCAR Cup Series all-time wins list.
Hamlin scored his first win in the Coke 600, second of 2022 and the 48th of his career.
“It’s so special,” Hamlin said. “It’s the last big one that’s not on my résumé. It meant so much.”
Hamlin and Thomas are now tied for 16th all-time on the series’ wins list.
Thomas raced in the Cup Series from 1949 to 1957, and one race in 1962, amassing 48 wins and two championships — 1951 and 1953.
Hamlin has raced in the Cup Series since 2005, earning all his victories with Joe Gibbs Racing.
The three-time Daytona 500 champion is ranked third among active drivers with victories in NASCAR’s premier series. Kyle Busch (60 wins) and Kevin Harvick (58 wins) have more.

Ahead of Hamlin on the wins list include Tony Stewart (49), Ned Jarrett (50), Junior Johnson (50), Lee Petty (54) and Rusty Wallace (55).
The next race for the Cup Series is scheduled for Sunday, June 5 at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois.
