Derek Kraus to run limited NASCAR Cup Series schedule
Kaulig Racing announced Thursday that Derek Kraus will get to run a limited schedule in the NASCAR Cup Series, starting next week.
Kraus will drive the No. 16 Western States Flooring Chevrolet in the March 3 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Kraus will run five more NASCAR Cup Series races in 2024:
- Phoenix in March and November
- Kansas in May
- Darlington in May
- World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in June
“I’m really excited to make my first Cup Series start with Kaulig Racing, the team that I also made my Xfinity Series debut with!” said Kraus. “I’m thankful to Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice for believing in me, as well as Western States Flooring, a partner that has supported me throughout my career. I can’t wait to get to work with Travis Mack’s group and see what we can do in Las Vegas.”
Kraus has some Cup Series experience. He practiced and qualified A.J. Allmendinger’s Cup Series car last year at Richmond when Allmendinger flew to Road America to run the Xfinity Series race.
“We’re excited to have Derek Kraus make his first Cup start with us at Kaulig Racing,” said Chris Rice, president of Kaulig Racing. “Not only did he practice in the No. 16 last year for AJ Allmendinger, but Derek is our simulator driver that helps get our setups ready each week. We know what Derek is capable of, and we can’t wait to see what he can do starting in Las Vegas.”

A Twin Valley, MN, native, Fjeld became a motorsports fan at just three years old (first race was the 2002 Pennsylvania 500). He worked as a contributor and writer for TRE from 2010-18. Since then, he has stepped up and covered 24 NASCAR race weekends and taken on a larger role with TRE. He became the co-owner and managing editor in 2023 and has guided the site to massive growth in that time.

Currently, he resides in Albuquerque, N.M., where he works for KOB 4, an NBC station. He works as a digital producer and does on-air reports. He loves spending time with friends and family, playing and listening to music, exploring new places, being outdoors, reading books and writing among other activities.
