Ferrucci to focus on NASCAR in ’21, will run Xfinity part-time

INDYCAR driver Santino Ferrucci announced Friday afternoon that he will drive 20 Xfinity races for Sam Hunt Racing’s No. 26 Toyota Supra in 2021.
Ferrucci’s first race is Feb. 27 at Homestead, which kicks off a slate of races mostly consisting of intermediate track races but also some short track races and a superspeedway race, according to FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass.
Ferrucci is the first driver to be announced for Sam Hunt Racing’s 2021 Xfinity driver lineup, with other drivers yet TBA. The team is receiving some support from TRD and will have former Jeremy Clements Racing crew chief Andrew Abbott as crew chief.
Ferrucci has 35 INDYCAR starts, with four starts in 2018 and full-time efforts in 2019 and 2020. Ferrucci’s best INDYCAR finish is fourth four times, including most recently during the Indianapolis 500 in August.
Ferrucci indicated an Indianapolis 500 deal would not be out of the question for 2021..
Colin Garrett finished 21st, two laps down, in Sam Hunt Racing’s debut at the 2019 Ford EcoBoost 300 season finale race at Homestead. The team made nine starts in 2020, with Brandon Gdovic scoring the team’s best finish, a 12th-place finish, in the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard.
