Former Watkins Glen track president passes away suddenly
Michael Printup, the former track president of Watkins Glen whose tenure transformed the beloved track into sustained success, has died. He was 60 years old.

Printup passed away suddenly, according to a statement issued Thursday confirming his death. He served as track president of Watkins Glen from 2009 to 2023 before moving on from the role just before their annual NASCAR weekend.
During Printup’s tenure, Watkins Glen transformed on and off the track. The track saw a noticeable increase in attendance and seats as demand grew due to multiple factors, including being host to some standout moments and races. Notably, in 2012, Marcos Ambrose outdueled Brad Keselowski for the win after a spin by leader Kyle Busch on the final lap in one of the most iconic finishes in NASCAR Cup Series history.
While NASCAR’s in-person attendance declined from 2009 to 2023, Printup and his staff kept the crowds coming back to Watkins Glen every year. The track has averaged annual weekend attendance of around 100,000 people, even to this day, as the event has become a regional and NASCAR staple.
After Printup moved on from Watkins Glen, he joined Racing America in July 2023 as the president of the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association. Then, in January 2024, he became the chief operating officer where he oversaw the Trans Am Series and its racing operations.
The Hamburg, New York, native worked for three decades in NASCAR prior to his sudden passing. He was also president of Americrown and oversaw the Levy food service contract for 12 NASCAR-owned racetracks.
Printup leaves behind his wife, Stephanie, two boys Brendan (Caitlin) and Matthew; and two granddaughters, Sophia and Vivienne. He was 60 years old.
Racing America issued the following statement on Printup’s death:
“Racing America is devastated to confirm the sudden passing of Chief Operating Officer Michael Printup. Michael was an icon in motorsports, a great partner and a friend. His passion for racing and commitment to the industry made a lasting impact on the sport. He will be deeply missed. Racing America sends our thoughts and condolences to Michael’s family, friends and colleagues. “
A memorial service for Printup is set for Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 2-4 p.m. at James A. Dyal Funeral Home in Summerville, South Carolina.
Watkins Glen International released a statement on Printup’s passing:
“Watkins Glen International is saddened by the passing of former President Michael Printup, who led the facility for 15 years.
During his tenure, Michael played a key role in the continued growth and success of Watkins Glen International, helping to strengthen its operations, partnerships, and standing within the motorsports industry while honoring the venue’s storied history.
Michael was a respected leader who left a lasting impact on the organization and those who worked alongside him. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”
