LOUDON, N.H. — Greg Van Alst will go to the rear of the NASCAR Xfinity Series field after having a brake issue in qualifying at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Van Alst qualified 36th, 3.151 seconds off of Chandler Smith’s pole-winning lap.

Alpha Prime Racing said afterward the team agreed to take it easy in qualifying after discovering a brake issue. However, they will fix the issue and drop to the rear Saturday for the Ambetter Health 200.

Alpha Prime tabbed Van Alst for the No. 45 Chevrolet in New Hampshire after Jeffrey Earnhardt didn’t have sponsorship for the weekend. Earnhardt will return July 22 at Pocono Raceway.

It’ll be Van Alst’s second Xfinity Series start. His first start ended after a wreck on lap 62.

Van Alst won the ARCA Menards Series opener at Daytona International Speedway. That win attracted Alpha Prime’s attention and garnered him the ride for Atlanta last week.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series Ambetter Health 200 kicks off just after 3 p.m. ET Saturday (Broadcast: USA Network, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90, PRN).
