Kyle Busch to a backup car after NASCAR Cup practice crash at Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa — Kyle Busch will go to a backup car for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway after a crash in practice.

Going into turn one, Busch got loose and overcorrected his No. 8 Chevrolet. That sent his car almost head-on into the outside wall, destroying the front end of his car.

Busch won’t be able to turn a qualifying lap after the crash and will start 37th of 37 starters Sunday. He was second-fastest in his group of practice before the crash.

The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion is looking for a big weekend either at Iowa or one of the next three weekends left in the regular season. Busch sits 81 points below the cutline and is on the verge of missing the playoffs and going winless for the second season in a row.

In June 2023, Busch won at World Wide Technology Speedway. It was his third win in the first 15 races that season. He hasn’t won since then but has come close, such as at Circuit of the Americas in March.

Busch’s winless skid has caught the attention of owner Richard Childress who was heard on the radio after the race at Dover saying, “We need better cars.”
