Kyle Larson crashes out of 109th Indianapolis 500

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Kyle Larson saw the first half of The Double end with a crash just before halfway in the 109th Indianapolis 500.

On lap 92, Larson restarted 17th and was in a solid spot to make something happen as the first half drew near. Larson was poised to contend for a top-10 spot a few laps after the restart once the top-four drivers pitted.

Larson never made it to that point. Exiting turn one, the field was in a scramble, going two- and three-wide, causing Larson to lift and downshift. The downshift spun him around and sparked a race-ending crash for himself, Sting Ray Robb and Kyffin Simpson.

Larson exited the car and took responsibility for the wreck.

“I got tight between Takuma and got loose, all over the place, so I spun. I just hate that I got a little too eager on the restart and caused that crashed. Bummed out. I hate that I got other people involved. We’ll move on and forget this one,” Larson told FOX.

After conducting interviews in Indy, Larson boarded a helicopter to begin his journey to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600.

According to Arrow McLaren team principal Tony Kanaan, Larson had a “hard out” of 4:07 p.m. ET. The rain delay and slow start to the Indy 500 put Larson right up against that time. However, crashing out early meant time was no issue, as cameras captured Larson flying to Charlotte at around 3:24 p.m. ET, while the race continued with more than 70 laps to go.

Larson will start second in the Coca-Cola 600, behind only Chase Briscoe.
