Kyle Larson upsets domination, gets upset in domination at Homestead-Miami Speedway

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Corey Heim and Kyle Larson put on dominating performances in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and Xfinity Series races at Homestead-Miami Speedway but neither performance ended with a win.

Coincidentally, it was Larson who went to victory lane Friday after mounting a massive comeback in the Truck Series race.

After a spin while racing Layne Riggs inside the top-five on lap 91 of 134 and restarting 25th with 39 laps to go, Larson hooked up to the far-outside lane and tore through the field to win.

Larson also had a little help from Heim whom he finished second to in the first two stages.

STAGE ONE TOP-10 (LAP 30): Corey Heim, Kyle Larson, Layne Riggs, Ty Majeski, Ross Chastain, Tyler Ankrum, Daniel Hemric, Stewart Friesen, Kaden Honeycutt, Chandler Smith.

STAGE TWO TOP-10 (LAP 60): Heim, Larson, Majeski, Friesen, Honeycutt, Riggs, Chastain, Hemric, Ankrum, Enfinger

Heim led 70 of the first 113 laps. However, on lap 114, he lost the lead when his truck unexpectedly shut off going into turn one. He recycled the power and rallied back to take the lead again with 11 laps to go — but it shut off again with three laps to go.

The issues ended Heim’s bid for a third win in the first four races of the season.

“I don’t know exactly what was going on. Never really had an issue like that. I’d be totally fine, and the engine would just hard cut on me. Dash would go black and have no power until I fully cycled it. So, I was coasting for six seconds trying to turn the power switch and turn it back (on). I don’t know,” Heim said. “It stinks. I think we should’ve won the race by six, seven seconds at the end there.”

Larson snatched victory from the jaws of Heim and Layne Riggs, the latter of whom he passed for the win officially with two to go.

“Not sure what happened to the 11 [Heim], but that worked out in our favor for sure,” Larson said. “I don’t think I would have gotten to him [otherwise]. Obviously, I would have gotten to second, probably, but that would have been tough to get to him. That last run was a lot of fun.”

TOP-10 FINISHERS (LAP 134): Kyle Larson, Layne Riggs, Corey Heim, Tyler Ankrum, Daniel Hemric, Ross Chastain, Jake Garcia, Chandler Smith, Grant Enfinger, Kaden Honeycutt.

Larson started what looked to be the first weekend sweep since Kyle Busch at Bristol in August 2017. Everything went well in the first two stages of the NASCAR Xfinity Series race as he stormed to the front from 17th.

STAGE ONE TOP-10 (LAP 45): Sammy Smith*, Kyle Sieg*, Ryan Sieg*, Kyle Larson, Sam Mayer, Justin Allgaier, Leland Honeyman Jr.*, Sheldon Creed, Jesse Love, Austin Hill *took fresh tires late in the stage

STAGE TWO TOP-10 (LAP 90): Larson, Mayer, Creed, Hill, Connor Zilisch, Nick Sanchez, Love, Allgaier, Smith, Brandon Jones

With eight laps to go, Larson led by 16 seconds and had everyone a lap down behind fifth-place — right as a caution flew for Taylor Gray spinning off of turn four.

On the overtime restart, Larson slid sideways as he tried to put the power down. That allowed Austin Hill and Justin Allgaier to sneak by and battle for the win.

Allgaier took the lead on the final lap and won — with mixed feelings.

“I was actually bummed to see the caution flag come out but it worked out in my favor.” Allgaier added. “I’m bummed I maybe got the [weekend] triple from Kyle [Larson] because I think he’s going to have a great shot at [winning] it tomorrow. But we were at the right place at the right time and I’m really proud of this race team.”

Larson led 132 of 201 laps but finished fourth. Two spots ahead was Sam Mayer who drew ire from Larson regarding the restart.

“I can’t go when my rear tires are off the ground,” Larson said. “I did everything I thought I could and the 41 just lagged back and slammed the s-it of me. Bummer, but cool to have had that big lead at the end.”

Mayer told NBC’s Dustin Long that he messed up the restart.

TOP-10 FINISHERS: Justin Allgaier, Sam Mayer, Austin Hill, Kyle Larson, Sheldon Creed, Jesse Love, Brandon Jones, Nick Sanchez, Daniel Dye, Carson Kvapil

While Larson won’t become the first driver to do a weekend sweep since 2017, Allgaier became the first multi-time winner this season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Like Heim in the Truck Series, Allgaier leads the points in the Xfinity Series. Allgaier leads by 29 points over Sam Mayer and is locked into the playoffs with two wins.

Heim leads the Truck points by eight points over Ty Majeski. Heim also has two wins that have locked him into the playoffs.

Next for Trucks is Bristol in two weeks. Next for Xfinity is Martinsville next Saturday.
