Layne Riggs penalized for Phoenix race
AVONDALE, Ariz. — NASCAR penalized Layne Riggs and ejected crew chief Dylan Cappello for Friday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season finale at Phoenix Raceway.
According to NASCAR, the No. 34 team added a panel “to the oil that closes off the area between it and the floorboard.” NASCAR deemed it an unpermitted adjustment.
Driver Layne Riggs will drop to the rear of the field before the race. Riggs will also serve a pass-through penalty after taking the green flag. Crew chief Dylan Cappello has also been ejected.
The team will still have to make a qualifying run. NASCAR rules allow teams to carry their qualifying set of tires over to the race. If they didn’t qualify, the No. 34 team would have one more set of fresh tires than all other teams.
