Legacy Motor Club sues Rick Ware Racing over charter deal

Legacy Motor Club is suing Rick Ware Racing, alleging they backed out of a charter purchase agreement signed last month.

In the lawsuit filed Tuesday, Legacy alleges RWR agreed to the deal on Jan. 6. Then, on March 3, they allegedly struck a binding charter purchase agreement.

Soon afterward, RWR is accused of backing out. According to The Athletic, they backed out because the agreement “had 2026 in it” when “Rick Ware was under the impression the charter transfer to Legacy would be for 2027.”

“Legacy has tried to talk sense into RWR to no avail. Legacy’s patience has run out and now brings this suit to enforce its rights and hold RWR to its deal,” Legacy stated in the lawsuit.

Legacy is seeking a prohibitory injunction. They allege they will face irreparable harm if they don’t get it.

Legacy Motor Club fields two entries in the NASCAR Cup Series for John Hunter Nemechek and Erik Jones. They also field a third part-time entry for majority owner Jimmie Johnson. Johnson finished third in the Daytona 500 and is set to race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May.

Rumors have swirled about the team possibly expanding to a three chartered entries. The lawsuit confirms they started looking at purchasing a third charter in October.
