Mechanical issues take CGR cars out of contention for Coca-Cola 600

Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 began with Chip Ganassi Racing’s Ross Chastain and Kurt Busch starting 10th and 12th, respectively, but progressed into a night the team will want to forget.

On Lap 46, Ross Chastain pitted for a broken oil pump belt. Chastain spent 37 laps in the garage getting the issue fixed and returned to the track on Lap 83.

On Lap 140, Kurt Busch reported no oil pressure exiting turn two, pitted and went to the garage. Busch spent 30 laps in the garage getting the belt issue fixed and returned to the track on Lap 170. However, when Busch returned to the track, the engine almost immediately let go and knocked Busch out of the race.

Chastain continued and will either finish 36th or 37th but Busch will finish 38th — last place — in the Coca-Cola 600.

Entering the Coca-Cola 600, Kurt Busch sat 18th place in points, 48 points behind the cutline, while Ross Chastain sat 20th, 58 points behind the cutline.
