NASCAR Cup Series: Shane van Gisbergen wins Sonoma as he sweeps the weekend

SONOMA, Calif. — Shane van Gisbergen wins the NASCAR Cup Series’ Toyota Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. He collects another crystal chalice after sweeping the Sonoma weekend.

This is his second win of the 2026 season and his eighth win of his career.

His Cup Series weekend did not start out as dominating as the final results showed. Due to his DNF last week at Naval Base Coronado, van Gisbergen had to go out in the first group of qualifying.

The second group had better track conditions which handed Shane a sixth place starting spot for the race, his lowest on the road all season.

It didn’t take him long to move into second but he failed to capture the lead at all in the first stage.

After he flipped the first stage break, he was able to set sail from the lead like usual. While he was able to sneak away from the pack in the second stage before flipping it like the first, the final stage was closer.

Shane led 74 of the 110 laps, but it looked as though the field has closed the gap to the road course ace.

Chase Briscoe, who finished second here last season, ran in the same position once more as the duo headed into the final few laps. He was able to close within half a second but was unable to find a way around him for the win.

van Gisbergen leaves Sonoma with a larger gap to the cutline as he gained a whopping 63 points. With the win today, he closed to within one win of tying the all-time road course win record of nine.

Jeff Gordon is the current holder of that Cup Series record.

Notable Results

Chase Briscoe and the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas looked to close the gap to SVG this weekend. He finished second while two other teammates claimed top five results as well.

Ty Gibbs qualified on the pole, led every lap in the first stage, and swept the stages in his third place run in wine country.

Then, Kyle Larson delivered yet another solid top five run on a road course in fourth. This is his fourth consecutive top five as he heats up to start the summer.

Christopher Bell displayed immense toughness in his fifth-placed run. He is still only a few weeks out from when he suffered a broken left wrist at Michigan and the 50 point day will help him stay in Chase contention.

Ryan Blaney finished sixth for his sixth straight top ten finish. Then, Connor Zilisch crossed the line in seventh for his first career top ten finish in the Cup Series.

Ryan Preece put together his first career top ten at Sonoma from eighth. The top ten will help him stay above the Chase cutline.

Michael McDowell finished in ninth to become the only driver to finish inside the top ten at every road course this season.

Finally, Alex Bowman completed the top ten from tenth. He earned his first top ten since Texas for his fourth total in 2026.

Who Advanced to Round 2?

Alex Bowman led the headlines as the largest upset in the opening round of the opening round of the In-Season Challenge. The 32nd seeded Bowman bested heavy favorite Tyler Reddick after Reddick suffered from power steering issues which left him to finish 36th place, four laps down.

Bowman will face Austin Cindric after he defeated Brad Keselowski.

Todd Gilliland and Michael McDowell were the other two drivers who upset their opponents to advance.

They will join Chase Briscoe, Ty Gibbs, Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, William Byron, Denny Hamlin, Carson Hocevar, Chris Buescher, Erik Jones, and our winner Shane van Gisbergen in round two at Chicagoland.
