NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series to race in Mexico City in 2025

MEXICO CITY — NASCAR announced Tuesday that the Cup and Xfinity Series will head to Mexico City and race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in 2025.

The two series will link up with the NASCAR Mexico Series for a weekend of racing, June 13-15, 2025. It will mark the first NASCAR U.S. national series race in another country since the Craftsman Truck Series’ seven-year run at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park ended in 2019.

“This is a historic moment for our sport, especially for the NASCAR Cup Series as it will be able to leave its mark in Mexico,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s Senior Vice President of Racing Strategy and Development. “This has been a long time coming to this announcement today. To be able to bring the Cup Series internationally for the first time in over 60 years is a big deal.”

“I remember thinking ‘What a dream it would be to race in the NASCAR Cup Series in my own country?’ and now here we are announcing a NASCAR Cup Series points race for 2025 in Mexico City. This is just a dream,” NASCAR Cup Series driver and Monterey, Mexico, native Daniel Suarez said.

For the NASCAR Cup Series, July 18, 1958, at Canadian Exposition Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was the most recent points race outside of the U.S. Lee Petty won that race in what was only the second-ever NASCAR Cup Series race held outside of the U.S. Buddy Shuman won the first Cup Series race outside of the U.S., held July 1, 1952 at Stamford Park in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Don Oldenberg also won a Convertible Series race there on July 6, 1956. Six years before, NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. and Curtis Turner participated in La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico.

For the NASCAR Xfinity Series, it marks a return to international racing that used to be prominent in the late-2000s and early-2010s.

From 2007-08, the Xfinity Series raced in not only the U.S., Mexico and Canada. That was because the series raced at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez from 2005-08 and at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, from 2007-13.

Since 2013, the Xfinity Series hasn’t raced outside of the U.S. But, 2025 will change that.

The race lengths haven’t been announced yet. According to NASCAR, they will use the 17-turn, 2.674-mile layout of the Mexico City road course.
