NASCAR suspends 7 crew members after Texas

NASCAR put the hammer down Tuesday after racing at Texas Motor Speedway, suspending seven crew members for various infractions.

Four crew members were suspended for violating rulebook sections 14.1.2 A, B & D. It specifies what “protective clothing and equipment must be worn, maintained, and used in accordance with the manufacturer/supplier directions.”

These are the four crew members who will sit out this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway:

  • Zachary Yager: Tire carrier for Chris Buescher, NASCAR Cup Series
  • Jacob Holmes: Tire carrier for Christopher Bell, NCS
  • Doug Warrick: Jackman for Austin Hill, NCS
  • Brandon Harder: Fueler for Brandon Jones, NASCAR Xfinity Series

Officials found Yager used improper gloves, Holmes and Warrick each used improper helmet and Harder used an improper apron.

Warrick is also the jackman for Parker Kligerman in the Xfinity Series. That means Big Machine Racing and Kligerman will have a different jackman at Talladega.

Brandon Harder is also the fueler for Kyle Larson in the Cup Series. Harder is the third member from Larson’s pit crew NASCAR suspended Tuesday.

NASCAR also suspended jackman Brandon Johnson and rear tire changer Calvin Teague for two races. It comes after Larson’s right-rear tire fell off on lap 117 in Sunday’s race.

Eric Ludwig and Mike Moss usually pit Corey LaJoie’s car. However, with the agreement Spire Motorsports has with HMS, HMS has tabbed them to replace Johnson and Teague.

LaJoie will get Donovan Williams and Dawson Backus to fill in for Ludwig and Moss at Talladega.

Williams was the jackman for Garrett Smithley and the No. 6 JD Motorsports team in the Xfinity Series at Texas. Backus is the rear tire changer for Brandon Jones in the Xfinity Series.

Johnson and Teague will return at Kansas Speedway, where Larson finished second last year.

NASCAR also indefinitely suspended Nick Covey for violating the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy.

Covey was the jackman for Austin Dillon as recently as the April 7 race at Martinsville Speedway. However, Richard Childress Racing replaced Covey with Garrett Crall in Texas.

Also on the penalty report, NASCAR fined these crew chiefs for having at least one loose lug nut on their vehicle:

  • Phillip Bell, No. 9 Xfinity Series team with Brandon Jones ($5,000)
  • Patrick Donahue, No. 48 Xfinity Series team with Parker Kligerman ($5,000)
  • Chris Carrier, No. 75 Craftsman Truck Series team with Stefan Parsons ($5,000)

NASCAR also suspended Carrier one race.
